Free Program
Why is my palm sick?
If you would like to know more
about palms, come to our free
lecture on Tuesday, February 20 at
2 p.m. Palms are a vital component
of our landscapes here in
Southwest Florida. We all need to
know how to keep them looking
their best. A beautiful palm against
a brilliant blue sky makes for great curb appeal.
Master Gardener Bob Bechtold will be presenting a program
designed to take the mystery out of palm care. Palms do have
special nutritional requirements, and if these needs are not
met, the palm will show signs of decline. Our soils here are not
designed to keep
most palms
looking their
best. Do your palms have yellowing, spotted, or misshapen fronds? When
was the last time you fertilized? How much fertilizer did you use, and what
was the formulation? When was the last time you really checked to see
that your palms looked healthy and robust? What should you prune, and
what should you not prune?
To keep our palms looking their
majestic best, we need to be
aware of potential diseases,
and the symptoms of disease or
nutritional distress. Trimming is
also always a bit confusing,
especially for new or part time
residents. Heads up: the
“hurricane cut” is unnecessary
and even detrimental to palms.
Come hear Bob take some of
the mystery out of growing
beautiful palms. He will show
the symptoms of disease, and
of malnutrition, and give you
information that will help you to cure your sick palms. The Master Gardener
volunteers present programs designed to bring you the most up to date
information from the horticultural experts at the University of Florida. Become
an educated homeowner.
Following our presentation, the Master Gardeners will be available to answer
individual questions and help identify pests. Bring specimens in a sealed
baggie and also bring photos so that we can see the size of your problem.

dropped stitches and recognizing basic stitches,. We have people of all levels in our
group, the veterans sharing skills with the beginners. Have you always wanted to
make that scarf? Lap blanket? Mittens for friends & family up north?
Come join us as we broaden our abilities in 2018!
