TENNIS CLUB Don Holway, dbh1124@live.com
The unusually heavy summer rains have been quite persistent which made it difficult to get on
the courts many days. However, with determination and able bodies, the water was regularly
removed from the courts, dried out, and made playable. An unexpected benefit of all the rain is
the courts are very clean.
Several club members worked to secure the courts as Hurricane Irma threatened our area.
This included removing the scoreboards, moving the benches to protected areas, moving all
court maintenance equipment indoors, and tying up the inter-court screens. The three shade
structures on the courts are wind rated to 150 mph; we just hope they don’t get tested.
Charlotte County adult
competitive tennis leagues
have finalized the
divisions for the upcoming
season. One of our two
women’s teams will be
competing in the Charlotte
County 50+ League and
the other team will play in
the Charlotte County
Women’s Tennis League.
Our three men’s teams
will be competing in the
Peace River Senior Men’s
Tennis League in
Divisions A3, B3, and B4.
We look forward to a great
competitive season.

Rule of the Month from USTA Publication “2017 Friend at Court”: Rules 22 and 23 relating to lets. The service is a let if:
a. The ball served touches the net, strap or band, and is otherwise good; or, after touching the net, strap or band,
touches the receiver or the receiver’s partner or anything they wear or carry before hitting the ground; or
b. The ball is served when the receiver is not ready. In the case of a service let, that particular service shall not count,
and the server shall serve again but a service let does not cancel a previous fault.
In all cases when a let is called, except when a service let is called on a second service, the whole point shall be
replayed.
Case 1: When the ball is in play, another ball rolls onto court. A let is called. The server had previously served a fault. Is
the server now entitled to a first service or second service?
Decision: First service. The whole point must be replayed.
