PUNTA GORDA POLICE DEPARTMENT Interim Captain Dylan Renz, drenz@pgorda.us

                                                     Code Red Notifications

The City of Punta Gorda utilizes the CodeRed® system. This
system is similar to 911, except in reverse – we call you instead
of you calling us. The system allows the City of Punta Gorda to
call targeted areas or the entire community in case of an emergency or during urgent situations that
require immediate attention. Examples are natural disasters (hurricane warnings/watches, fires),
man-made disasters (terrorism, chemical spills, gas leaks), search and rescue (missing children, adults or disabled
persons), crime (prisoner escape warnings, sexual offender/predator alerts), as well as other emergency situations.

You can register on-line to receive Code Red notifications by going to our website,
         http://www.ci.punta-gorda.fl.us/depts/police/police_codered.html.

FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR….

As you read this message, my hope is that each member of PGICA and the PGI community “weathered” the storm
with minimal suffering. Mother Nature definitely grabbed our attention during recent weeks as we watched the path of
Hurricane Irma chart a course for SWFL. We know that the impact on our economy and residents could have been
much greater and for that we give thanks. During the storm, the kindness and generosity of our neighbors was
evident throughout the Isles. Thanks to our city and county officials, our first responders, and our neighbors, for all
their efforts to ensure our well-being and safety.

Unfortunately, power outages, relocation of our PGICA members and The Commentator writers, disruption of internet
service, etc. resulted in a disruption of the compilation and printing of The Commentator for October. Our goal
remains to have the October edition available in a timely manner on our website. We regret that the weather
emergency resulted in the inability of some groups to submit information this month. Look for information about all
           groups in future editions.

During recent months, we hope that you have enjoyed some of our changes. As a result of changes in mailing and
printing guidelines, we were forced to move our submission date for all contributors to an earlier date each month.
Our new layout team, under the guidance of Don Leitch, has been working to provide more photos and captions. We
hope you enjoy seeing your friends and neighbors in our photos. The writers strive to ensure that their articles
provide not only information about upcoming events but share the spirit of their group. With the changes, we added
an activity calendar to include at least six weeks in each edition.

Check out the information in this month’s edition about Code Red, the Punta Gorda Emergency Notification Program
and Alert Charlotte, the Charlotte County notification program. Both provide timely information for residents to stay
informed and take necessary precautions when needed. Subscribe to the newsletter compiled by our City Council
Members help me stay informed about the happenings on the harbor.

Growth, improvement and change often comes with challenges. Our PGICA Officers and Board Members want to
hear from all members. Visit with them monthly during their Coffee with the Board. Check out the new design of our
website. Patronize our advertisers, join a new club, recruit a new member, participate in educational programs,
volunteer, join us for a fun event, or borrow an item from our loaner program. The return on your membership
investment is unlimited. Your actions are what will raise the bar.

It has been my pleasure to serve in various roles within The Commentator staff. I look forward to sharing all the great
programs and activities as we move into another season. Special thanks to all volunteers who helped pull this edition
           together.
