Blood Drive, February 23: Welcome to February, the month that is known for love. Show that love to your neighbors in
the community. I am asking that you assist me in showing our love by giving blood. Please talk with your neighbors and
friends. Let them know that we are having a blood drive and the Big Red Bus will be in the parking lot, Friday, February
23, from 1:30 to 4:30.
You can give blood every 56 days and you must be in good general health and feeling well. You must be at least 17
years old and may be as old as 110 if your doctor allows.
You don’t need a special reason to give blood. You just need your own reason. Some of us give blood because we were
asked by a friend. Some know that a family member or a friend might need blood someday. Some believe it is the right
thing to do.
Whatever your reason, the need is constant, and your contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply.
And you’ll feel good knowing you've helped change a life.
Come prepared. Have a light meal and plenty to drink. Bring your donor card, driver's license or two other forms of
identification, and the names of medications you are taking.
The actual donation takes about eight to ten minutes, during which time you will be seated comfortably. You will receive
a mini physical to check your pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, and hemoglobin. The process is safe and sterile.
The staff and volunteers will be available if you have any questions.
After donating, you will be supplied a snack and something to drink and will get a t-shirt. You can leave the site after you
are finished and continue with your normal daily activities.
Enjoy the feeling of accomplishment knowing that you have helped save lives.

PGICA RECOGNITION PROGRAM Ed Zapke, ezapke@comcast.net
The board of directors of the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association is pleased to announce
that in 2018, they will once again recognize individuals who have made a significant
contribution to our community. In the past, PGICA has recognized over 50 individuals who
have helped to make PGI a very special place to live. Each has been honored with an
engraved brick located in a garden at the southeast corner of the PGICA Center. Members
of the class of 2017 included: Craig Esterly, Bob and Struss Shirk, and Ray Rose.
In order to be recognized, one must currently be or have been a resident of Punta Gorda
Isles. Selection will be by a committee composed of past presidents of PGICA. The
committee will be looking for nominees who have made a difference within PGI, the city, or Charlotte County. Please
note that membership in the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association is not a prerequisite.
Now would be the time to begin thinking of those persons who deserve recognition. It could be a neighbor, a friend, a
member of one of the many clubs or organizations associated with our community, or just someone you know of or have
heard about.
Information regarding the PGICA Recognition Program for 2018 will be included in future editions of The Commentator.
Additional information is also available at the PGICA office.
