TENNIS CLUB Don Holway, dbh1124@live.com
The Tennis Club did not hold a social event during December, but we will resume the social
events on January 16. The ladies’ open tennis group will host this event and it will be held in
conjunction with the club’s annual meeting. Round-robin, mixed-doubles tennis will begin at 3
and the annual meeting will be held at 5. Dinner will be served immediately following the
meeting.
During the meeting the new board of directors will be elected by a vote and inducted into office.
We are still looking for nominees to fill the president and vice president positions. Nominations
can be sent to Dick Shelton.
The Tennis Club ball machine is being used more regularly this time of year, and the increased use takes a toll on the
tennis balls. We have two plastic bins, placed on courts one and three for members to recycle used tennis balls that will
be used in the machine. If you have tennis balls that are still serviceable, please place them in these bins. Also, if you
find balls that are dead in the machine, please remove them and dispose of them in the trash cans on the court, or feel
free to donate dead balls to the
dog park or shelters.
We would like to welcome new
members, Sherwood and Mary
Zink.
Scheduling reminder: Our courts
are now on the winter schedule for
dedicated time. Use our online
reservation system on our website
to reserve the ball machine and
court time during non-dedicated
time periods. Our website is at

Full instructions for using the
reservation system are found on
the website.
New members are always
welcome regardless of their level
of play. For more information

Rule of the month from USTA Publication, Friend at Court 2017 – Making Calls Part Two
(https://www.nfhs.org/media/1018049/2016fac_full.pdf):
*Out calls reversed.
A player who calls a ball out shall reverse the call if the player becomes uncertain or realizes that the ball was
good. The point goes to the opponent and is not replayed. However, when a receiver reverses a fault call on a
serve that hit the net, the server is entitled to two serves.
* Partners’ disagreement on calls.
If one partner calls the ball out and the other partner sees the ball good, the ball is good. It is more important to give
opponents the benefit of the doubt than to avoid possibly hurting a partner’s feelings. The tactful way to achieve the
desired result is to tell a partner quietly of the mistake and then let the partner concede the point. If a call is
changed from out to good, the principles of reversed calls above apply.
*Spectators never make calls.
A player shall not enlist the aid of a spectator in making a call. No spectator has a part in a match.
*Audible or visible calls.
No matter how obvious it is to a player that an opponent’s ball is out, the opponent is entitled to a prompt audible or
visible out call.
