There are two updates to the handling of seawall failures. First, FEMA notified the city that properties could be removed
from the City’s application for relief funds. This means that the City can allow individual home owners to contract for
repairs on their seawalls, as long as they get a permit, use City seawall panels, follow City specifications and pay for all
the repair services. A few home owners are pursuing this avenue and should contact the City on how to proceed.
Second, the City will make a concerted effort to slow down boaters in canals, as it is clear that any boat traffic above a
“No Wake” speed is causing further erosion around failed seawalls. Official “Slow Down” signs are available through the
Police Department to place near your damaged seawall, plus the Police Department and the Volunteer Marine Patrol will
be out on the canals diligently enforcing appropriate boat speeds and wake heights. This is the time to be mindful and
conscientious of your fellow neighbor, as this will be a long-term recovery process.
Phase One of the renovation of Gilchrist Park is complete and the park is open for use. Because the cost of bathrooms
was way too high due to FEMA flood zone requirements, their construction is delayed into 2018. Temporary bathroom
facilities are being contracted for and hopefully be in place by the first of the year. Some of the lighting is too bright and
fixes are in the works. Overall, the park is beautiful and a great addition to the city. The children’s playground is next, and
is scheduled to be reopened in the first quarter of 2018. Phase Two design is near completion and will extend west to the
Bayfront facility, and will focus on parking and green space while maintaining the tennis and pickleball courts. The
basketball court will also be refurbished. Construction could start in late 2018.
The City of Punta Gorda will be changing its residential refuse service from manual collection to semi-automated. In
conjunction with the new service method, the City will be purchasing rolling refuse carts for residents. The City will be
offering three different sizes. These changes do not affect residents utilizing dumpsters (multi-family), residential yard
waste, recycling or commercial customers.
In order to receive the cart size of your choice, you will need to make your selection by January 16. Otherwise, the
standard size 32-gallon cart will automatically be delivered to your residence. The City-provided carts may only be used
for garbage, not yard waste or recycling. Sanitation crews will still be picking up the extra items left out for collection. For
questions, please contact the Public Works Department at 941-575-5050.There will be no change in collection days; the
pick-up schedule will remain the same.
