ACBL DUPLICATE BRIDGE Mary Chupak, 941-575-1755, chupak@comcast.net
Hi Sarah: My partner and I held these two hands in our duplicate game. I was the dealer with
♠K Q 5 2; ♥A 5; ♦3; ♣A K Q 9 7 2. I opened the bidding with 1 Club, partner bid 1 diamond and
we worked our way to 5 diamonds, making 6. Her hand was ♠4; ♥K T 7 4; ♦A K Q J T 8 6; ♣3.
When we looked at the score sheet, five pairs bid and made slam, and two had stopped in 3 NT,
but made slam. Can you suggest a bidding sequence to help us find the slam? Anonymous
My New Zealand partner once asked me if I worked out my first and second bids before the
auction started. I told her I had never thought of that, but I do now! Before I open the bidding, I
size up my hand as minimum (12 to 14), medium (15 to 17), and maximum (18 to 19). You had
a beauty with 18 HCPs and two length points in clubs. You want to paint a picture of your hand
with your first two bids and let your partner be the captain. One club shows 12 to 14, and after your partner’s 1 diamond
response, you should jump shift into two spades, showing at least 19 points. Your partner now knows that you have a
combined point total of 35 (19 +16), and it is her responsibility to get you to slam! She might bid 3 hearts (forcing) or just
go ace asking! I love this game and still keep learning every time I play!

ROUND ROBIN BRIDGE GROUP Catherine & Charles Eliason, cattgrt@aol.com
We invite all bridge players to join our fun group. We are an active couples bridge club where two pairs meet in a
member’s home approximately twice a month. We are flexible. Any two friends are welcome to participate as a “couple.”
Games begin in November and must be played by the end of February. You arrange the time which is convenient to you
and your opponents, so if you are a snowbird, or gone for an extended period, your games can be scheduled for when
you are here. We end the season with a luncheon and awards ceremony. If you like to play rubber bridge, come and join
us! If you have questions or wish to participate, please contact Cathy or Charlie Eliason, 941-621-4579 or
cattgrt@aol.com.
