ACBL DUPLICATE BRIDGE Mary Chupak, 941-575-1755, chupak@comcast.net
The Summer North American Bridge Championships were held July 20 to
30 in Toronto. A new event was added to the tournament calendar, the
Summer Online Individual. It was a four day national-rated contest which
ran from July 23 to 26. Twenty four boards were played on each of the days
with a carryover of scores from one session to the next. You were allowed
three hours to complete a session with three robots at the table. You could
pick any time to start your hands – even play in your PJs.

I decided to participate! The hands were exciting, and I wish I could play
                                                some of them again. I was dealt this beauty: ♠9 2; ♥A Q J 9; ♦None; ♣A Q J
                                                T 7 6 4. I loved the shape and I began to have delusions of grandeur. I
opened the bidding with 1 Club and my robot partner responded 1 Spade.
After I rebid 3 Clubs and the robot bid 3 No Trump, I passed. The human
                                                always plays the hands. The robot tabled this hand: ♠A T 8 3; ♥T 6 2; ♦K Q
J 7 6; ♣9 after the spade King opening lead. Nine tricks were needed to
fulfill this contract. I counted six Club tricks, one Spade, and one Heart.
Where do I find another one? I took the spade Ace, and led the nine of
clubs. I meant to cover it with the ten, but my fingers played a small one and
the nine held the trick. I could have cried! I led a low heart to the Jack and it was covered with the King! I managed to go
down one and was sure that everyone else would do better! The event was played at Bridge Base Online and attracted
2510 players from around the world. When you can’t join us for bridge at the clubs, BBO is a good alternative. Visit the
website, download the program and play.
