Are you prepared for the 3 H’s of Florida summers? Heat, humidity and hurricanes? And you can’t forget the afternoon
rains that seem to interrupt the otherwise perfect Florida weather this time of year? Charlotte County has lots of tips for
prepping your home, staying comfortable and safe
Celtic Ray during the 3 H’s of Florida summer. Newcomers may
find they like the summers with a bit of wind off the gulf
more than the erratic weather patterns they’ve lived
with in other parts of the country! However, the cool
mornings of a Midwestern day feel heavenly as this
writer puts ink on the paper!
While some of our club have “taken the summer off” by
returning to cooler climates or used it for travelling time,
activities still abound for all who wish to partake in
them. Every month starts out with Happy Hour on the
first and third Wednesday at St. Andrews South
Country Club, 1901 Deborah Drive from 5 to 7 p.m.
Questions about the Happy Hours can be directed to
Susan Brown, exgatorceo@yahoo.com or Michelle
Maloney, macaloney@bellsouth.net. Despite the
appetizers always provided, this is a great time to head
out afterwards with a few friends to some of the many
local restaurants offering specials for summer guests.
Hosted Dinner chairman MaryAnn Darst puts folks together for monthly dinners. Contact her at madarst@kw.com or
913-226-8471 to say you’d like to participate. Don’t be shy about it. This is a great way to get to know a few other folks
in the club. One member hosts and provides the main dish while attendees bring their own drink and provide side
dishes to the meal. You are never asked to host
until you have participated in the dinners a couple
of times. You state the number of people who can
comfortably accommodate.
Ladies are stilling lunching in Punta Gorda! They
are headed to Laishley’s Crab House at 50
Laishley Court on July 12 for a noon lunch. They’ll
be at Hurricane Charley’s at 30 Retta Esplanade
on August 9 also at noon. Both places offer
waterfront casual dining although the heat may
call for an indoor option. Deb Morlachetta can
provide additional information at
debrat114@comcast.net or 609-502-8243. Sign
up on the Newcomers web page calendar.
Ladies Lunch
Men are also meeting through the summer for
lunches. Phil’s 41, 1975 Tamiami Trail, will be the noon
gathering spot on July 12. The men will be meeting at
Burnt Store Grille & Family Restaurant on August 9 at
noon. Contact Joe Bukowski at 973-769-2310 or
jbuko6331@gmail.com or Jay Darst at
913-220-8471 or madarst@kw.com for more information.
No sign up is required. Just come when you can.
General membership meetings are taking on a new life!
Those who came to the June event were treated to a
typical all-American ”picnic” indoors but with all the
accoutrements of an outdoor activity. Ladder ball, hula-
hooping, corn-hole throwing (or bag-o as known in some
parts of the country), decorated picnic tables and the club
-provided chicken, pork, salads and build-your-own
sundaes provided lots of fun!
