FLORIDIANS
Our mission is to provide social opportunities. Our
goals are to make friends, participate, learn, and
enjoy life.
Make new friends! Enjoy life! If these are your goals too,
new members are always welcome. Check out the activities we have planned and
contact Membership Chairman Rolf Simonson at rolfsimo@gmail.com.
Memories of the Floridians Mardi Gras party linger with mouth-watering
jambalaya, feathery masks, sparkly beads, and dancing to the sweet tones of the
Charlotte High School Jazz Band. But spring is here, and April will bring its own
opportunities for making new friends and enjoying the company of old friends while sharing a meal or playing golf, or
going to the theater, among other possibilities.
Our first gathering of the month will be our Meet and Greet on April 5 at 5 p.m. at Sheraton
Four Points in Punta Gorda. Come for drinks and appetizers at happy hour prices. Chat with
your old friends and meet your new friends. You can see them again the next week at the
Floridians Spring Barbeque. Both events can be reminders to establish the habit of wearing
your name tag.
Our April meeting will, again this year, be a barbeque at the PGI Civic Association on April 9,
at 5:30 p.m. Weather permitting, we will eat outside. Members who wish to attend, RSVP to
Judy Denham, 941-833-8945, by April 6, so we will know
how much barbequed chicken to order. Your ticket to the barbeque will be to bring
canned goods to be contributed to the Food Pantry, which runs low in the summer
when our population decreases. Not only will you enjoy a good meal with good people,
you will be doing good at the same time.
Ladies, you will gather for your lunch out on April 20. Contact Betty Peterson at
941-639-0599 for reservations.
On April 17 at 5 p.m. the ladies and gentlemen will dine together at Laishley Crab
House for our monthly Dine Around. Make your reservation by calling Joyce Gleason
at 941-637-5921 by April 15 or sign up online. Don’t forget to wear your name tag!
If the theme for April seems to be dining together, the month wouldn’t be complete
without dining in each other’s homes for Food and Friends. This month it will be April
27. Linda Supakoff coordinates this activity, so if you want to attend or host, contact her at 772-539-1476. Each person
who attends will be asked to host some time during the year.
While the Floridians find pleasure in spending time together over food-laden tables, to round out our lives we often get
together to do something besides eat. Opera lovers can enjoy a performance of Luisa Miller streamed live from the Met
on April 14 at 12:30 p.m. and Cendrillon on April 28 at 12:55 p.m. Both are in the Port Charlotte Regal Cinema. For more
information contact Larry Lowy, 941-347-8900.
Couples “casual-no-stress” golf is every Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Twin Isles Country Club. Email Jan Lorton at
janlorton@hotmail.com.
Mah Jongg is at PGICA every Wednesday, 1 to 4 p.m., and at members’ homes every Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. For
information call Susan Berger, 941-639-2330.
The Floridian Book Club is up and running. This will be an open club, meaning that
any Floridian is welcome to join. If you are interested, please email Kathy
Simonson to let her know at ksimonson58@gmail.com. You will be added to the
list and receive emails keeping you updated on the meetings and the book
selections. The meetings will be held monthly on Tuesdays, at PGICA at 10 a.m.
Meetings are scheduled for April 10, May 8, and June 12. The club will not meet in
July and August. For the April meeting, we are reading Flight of the Sparrow by
Amy Belding Brown.
Come join us while we laugh, eat, dance, think, and play in this little slice of
Paradise.
