Adding Iris to your Florida Yard
Join the Master Gardeners as we discuss
“Adding Iris to Your Florida Yard” on Tuesday,
April 17 at 2 p.m. Flowering plants in the Iris
family add color, texture, and form to any
home landscape. Both native and non-native
types of iris grow in Florida, with the exception
of the northern bearded
(German) garden iris. Learn how
to grow these sensational irises.
Many are spring bloomers.

‘wet’ continuously while others
require drier soil conditions. Photo by Kim Lawton
Consider growing iris in mixed Myakka River State Park - Native Iris
planting beds or in containers.
Choose one or more from the following:
native iris, Siberian iris, Regina iris,
Louisiana iris, yellow flag, blue flag
copper iris, walking iris, African iris,
blackberry lilies, and blue-eyed grass.
There are so many possibilities that will
add dimension to your landscape. This
session will cover planting tips, care and
maintenance of this interesting plant. Our
presenter will be Thomas Becker, native
plant specialist with the Charlotte County
Extension
Service.
Following our Iris
program, we will
offer gardening
suggestions
pertinent to this
time of year. The
Master Gardeners
will also be
available to
answer your specific questions regarding plant care and
insect or pest problems. Bring specimens in a sealed
plastic baggie, and photos also.
